Community
My concept of community has changed through the years.
As an adolescent, community meant the kids I went to school with, the peers I considered friends.
As a college student, I found community in the student groups with which I was involved.
As a young married couple, we found community in close relationships with other young married couples.
And as a young mom, community meant hanging out with other moms and their kids who were in the same stage of life as me and my children.
In other words, community used to be defined by people who were like me. Today, I find that definition and application of community limiting and restrictive.
Today I find community in places I never would have suspected I would find it. I think about the networks of which I am a part, the tables at which I sit, the homes into which I am welcomed.
I am thankful for the richness diversity in community has brought into my life. I am thankful for the people who have helped me see the world in all its richness and vibrant colors. I am thankful to find a home in so many settings.
